Vike harriers show strong in Wildcat Classic

A pair of top-20 finishes helped the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity cross country team capture sixth place out of 25 teams at the Wildcat Classic Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Juniors Brock Spahr and Jacob Wust led the Vikings to their high finish. Spahr captured 12th place, crossing the finish line in 16:13.5. Wust finished five spots after him, taking 17th in 16:26.

Senior Nolan Young finished next for Huntington North, placing 45th among team runners with a clocking of 17:02.5. Sophomore Isaiah Clampitt took 52nd, stepping over the end stripe in 17:11.9, while junior Drew Davis claimed 64th, posting a time of 17:19, to round out the Vikings’ scoring five.

Sophomore Wilson Whicker attained 65th in 17:30.7 while senior Aaron Hendryx earned 69th in 17:40.9 to complete the team’s top seven.

Also competing for Huntington North was junior Jarid Miller, 81st overall in 17:45.2; senior Jackson Wright, 94th in 18:01.6; and senior JJ Whicker, 105th in 18:13.7.

Caston junior Mitchell Rans was the race’s individual champion with a clocking of 15:30.2.

Valparaiso won the race by a wide margin with a register of 39. Zionsville was runner-up with 139 points, followed by Noblesville, 143; Harrison, 155; Hamilton Southeastern, 164; Huntington North, 182; Wawasee, 205; McCutcheon, 211; Wapahani, 259; and New Haven, 324, to round out the top 10.

In the junior varsity race, the Vikings finished fifth out of 12 teams.

Junior Alex Bishop paced Huntington North, placing 18th among team runners with a clocking of 18:00.4. Sophomore Elijah Eckert took 31st, stopping the timer at 18:33.6. Senior Daniel Shively posted a time of 18:43.4, good for 32nd. Sophomore Clayton Johnson and freshman Conner Miller finished back-to-back, with Johnson taking 33rd in 18:50.9 and Miller claiming 34th in 18:51.2 to cap the team’s score at 148.
