Viking baseball team to hold 2nd HR derby

The Huntington North High School baseball team will hold the second-annual Dyer Derby on Friday, Sept. 29, at 5:30 p.m. on the varsity baseball field.

The event will challenge competitors in three age divisions to clobber as many home runs as possible. The divisions are kindergarten through second grade; third through fifth grade; and sixth through eighth grade.

The first two divisions will give competitors the option of hitting a coach’s pitch or batting from a tee. In the first division, the longest ball wins, while in the second participants will be tasked with clearing a 140-foot fence. The third division will see participants challenged with smacking a coach’s pitch over a 200-foot fence.

The winners will receive trophies sponsored by Dyer Health and Wellness and be recognized at halftime of that evening’s football game.

If there is inclement weather, the derby will be held in the school’s fieldhouse.

There is a fee to participate in the event. That fee is waived for those who pre-register for the team’s youth baseball camp.
