IWU downs HU netmen

The Huntington University men’s tennis team fell in convincing fashion to visting Indiana Wesleyan University, 2-7, on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The Foresters’ lone wins came at first and second singles. Ignacio Poncio disposed of Eli Steiner, 6-1, 6-3, at first singles, and Rodrigo Manzo cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Zolnikov at second singles.

The Foresters dropped to 5-3 overall, 4-2 in Crossroads League action.

IWU swept through the doubles easily to start the match. Poncio and Mariano Echevarria at first doubles lost to Steiner and Zolnikov, 2-8, at first, Manzo and Giovanni Martinez were beaten by Gavin White and Jacob Rankin at second and Luke Buttermore and Jacob Shelton fell 1-8 at third to Joel Montgomery and Austin Christner.

Completing the singles, Martinez lost at third to White, 0-6, 4-6; Echevarria lost at fourth to Rankin, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6; Brody Worl took a 1-6, 1-6, drubbing from Christner at fifth; and Buttermore went down, 0-6, 1-6, to Tyler Abbot at sixth.
