HU pair show well at ITA Regionals

Two Huntington University men’s tennis team players made it to the Sweet 16 in singles action at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University over the weekend.

Playing in the main draw as the No. 9 seed, Ignacio Poncio cruised to a pair of wins over Crossroads League foes before dropping a 0-6, 4-6 decision to Gjorgii Popovski, while Rodrigo Manzo at No. 14 lost to Artur Culilcovschi of UNOH, 2-6, 1-6, after earlier dispatching a pair of foes.

Foresters Voldymyr Kohut and Brody Worl claimed the Men’s B Doubles Consolation Draw with an 8-1 routing over Indiana Wesleyan players Casey Mellinger and Levi Rees in the consolation finals. They finished 1-1 on the day.

Poncio stopped Taylor’s Victor Chang, 6-2, 6-2, and IWU’s Tyler Abbott, 6-3, 6-0, before falling. Manzo beat Lawrence Tech’s Patrick Szymczak, 6-4, 6-2, and IWU’s Austin Christner, 6-2, 6-3, before losing.

Poncio and doubles partner Mariano Echevarria beat a pair from IWU in their first round match before losing to Indiana Tech’s Rui Lima and Alvaro Garrido, 5-8, in the Sweet 16.

In singles play, Echevarria went 2-2 in the tourney. After starting with a 2-6, 0-6 loss to Eli Steiner of IWU, he beat Andre Danelli, of Taylor, 6-4, 7-5, and Alex Reinbold, of Spring Arbor, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Lukas Kanther, of Goshen College.
