HU netmen dispatch Pilots, 8-1

The Huntington University men’s tennis team had no trouble with host Bethel College, dispatching the Pilots, 8-1, on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Foresters, 6-3, 5-2 in Crossroads League action, swept singles play. In the first match, junior Ignacio Poncio defeated Jacob Macri, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Rodrigo Manzo posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Evan Ferguson in the second contest. Junior Giovanni Martinez took the No. 3 tilt, downing Sidney Petersen, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Mariano Echevarria beat Jose Morales, 6-3, 6-0, in the fourth tilt. Sophomore Brody Worl posted a 6-3, 6-3 win versus Brian Shembarger at the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Luke Buttermore then rounded out the team’s solo victories with a 4-6, 6-2 (1-0) triumph over Chad VanDosen in the sixth match.

Doubles play saw the first twosome of Poncio and Echevarria top Macri and Morales, 8-5, while the second duo of Manzo and Martinez beat Ferguson and Petersen, 8-4, to round out Huntington’s wins.

The Foresters’ lone loss on the day came at third doubles, where Buttermore and sophomore Jacob Shelton fell to Shembarger and VanDosen, 3-8.
