Even without top player, HU netmen dispatch Purdue Northwest

Even without top singles player Ignacio Poncio, the Huntington University men’s tennis team easily dispatched visiting Purdue Northwest, 6-3, on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The Foresters, 8-3, won five of the six singles matches, losing only at No. 3. Rodrigo Manzo stepped into Poncio’s No. 1 spot and topped Ulf  Grosseloh, 6-4, 6-4, and Giovanni Martinez at No. 2 won a tough one over Moritz Gisy, 0-6, 6-4, (10-8). Jacob Shelton at fourth singles topped Diego Pimentel, 7-6, 6-2; Brody Worl at fifth singles defeated Dru Kennedy, 6-1, 6-2; and Luke Buttermore at sixth singles topped Carter Moldenhauer, 6-0, 6-1.

The remaining HU win came at first doubles, where Manzo and Martinez edged Grosseloh and Moldenhauer, 9-7.

Mariano Echevarria at third singles fell to Mauricio Villacres, 6-4, 4-6, (10-5). At second doubles, Buttermore and Shelton lost to Gisy and Villacres, 3-8, and at third doubles Echevarria and Vova Kolhut lost to Pimente and Kennedy, 3-8.
