Viking harriers defend Northeast 8 Conference crown

Behind two top-five finishes, the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity cross country team won the Northeast 8 Conference championship race for the second year in a row on Saturday, Sept. 30, on the Huntington University Course.

Brock Spahr won the race for the Vikings while Jacob Wust placed fourth. Spahr, a junior, crossed the finish line in 16:13.2 while Wust, also a junior, clocked in at 16:26.9.

Sophomore Wilson Whicker was Huntington North’s next finisher, claiming 11th in 16:59.9. Sophomore Isaiah Clampitt and senior Nolan Young rounded out the team’s scoring five with back-to-back finishes. Clampitt took 14th in 17:12.2 while Young secured 15th in 17:14.5.

Seniors Aaron Hendryx and JJ Whicker completed the Vikings’ top seven. Hendryx earned 17th in 17:19.6 while Whicker attained 20th in 17:23.2.

After Huntington North and its register of 45, Bellmont was runner-up with 62 points, followed by DeKalb, 107; New Haven, 111; Leo, 138; East Noble, 140; Columbia City, 143; and Norwell, 175.

The junior varsity race also went to Huntington North.

The Vikings were led by top overall finisher Drew Davis. The junior stepped over the end stripe in 17:26.5.

Second for Huntington North was sophomore Elijah Eckert, who placed third in 18:04.7. Senior Jackson Wright finished fourth in 18:14.3. Junior Alex Bishop earned sixth in 18:25.6 while junior Jarid Miller took ninth in 18:31.9 to cap the team’s score at 23.

Freshman Conner Miller and senior Daniel Shively completed the Vikings’ top seven. Miller secured 13th in 18:45.0 while Shively claimed 15th in 18:48.4.
