Lady Vike harriers second at conference meet

A trio of top-10 finishes propelled the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity cross country team to second place in the Northeast 8 Conference championship race on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Huntington University Course.

Chloe Scheiber led the Lady Vikings to their runner-up finish. A senior, Scheiber crossed the finish line in 18:49.4 to capture fourth place. Junior Alena Miller claimed seventh, turning in a time of 19:31.6. Junior Kyler Hoopingarner stepped over the end stripe in 20:03.9, good for ninth. Freshman Hanna Whitney took 18th, stopping the timer in 20:43.8. Senior Charlotte Borland then capped the team’s score at 60, placing 22nd in 21:12.4.

Emma Melcher secured 24th in 21:21.3 while fellow senior Hollyn Anderson attained 38th in 23:20.8 to round out Huntington North’s day.

The race’s top overall finisher was Tyler Schwartz, of DeKalb. The senior clocked in at 17:45.2.

East Noble won the race with a register of 49. After Huntington North was DeKalb with 71 points, followed by Norwell, 88; Columbia City, 90; Bellmont, 159; Leo, 194; and New Haven, 246.

Led by first-place finisher Kendyl Coles, the Lady Vikings won the junior varsity race with a score of 32.

Coles, a sophomore, led all runners across the finish line with a clocking of 21:42.7. Freshman Lesley Zook followed for Huntington North, claiming third in 22:10.0. Junior Lisa Nalliah took seventh, stopping the timer in 23:33.6. Freshman Naomi Richison clocked in at 23:35.7, good for ninth, while junior Shelby Smith posted a time of 24:21.2, good for 12th.

Juniors Drew Fletcher and Theresa Oellinger rounded out the Lady Vikes’ top seven. Fletcher placed 15th in 24:59.2 while Oellinger finished 16th in 25:02.3.
