Lady Vike spikers win Southwood Invitational

The Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team won the Southwood Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Lady Vikings, 21-8, topped Muncie Central in the championship match, 2-1. Coach Trinda Goings’ squad won the first set, 25-21, before getting edged in the second, 25-27. Huntington North bounced back in the final frame, winning 15-11.

Junior Macy Niswander led the Lady Viking offense with 12 kills. Senior Kaitlyn Stephan helped facilitate the scoring with 29 assists. Senior Rileigh Johnson and sophomore Morgan Richison supplemented the team’s offensive effort with two aces apiece.

Defensively, Johnson paced Huntington North with 19 digs while Stephan and Niswander both registered four blocks.

In pool play, the Lady Vikings topped Bishop Luers and Northrop.

Huntington North dispatched Luers, 3-1. Coach Goings’ crew won the first two sets, 25-15, 25-22, before dropping the third, 14-25. The Lady Vikes brushed aside the loss and finished off the Lady Knights with a 25-18 win.

Niswander, senior Kalee Platt and junior Maddy Robrock spearheaded the Huntington North offense with 11 kills apiece. Stephan backed them up with 43 assists. Platt also served up two aces.

On the defensive side, Johnson and junior Brette Fawcett produced 11 digs apiece while Robrock logged three blocks.

The Lady Vikings swept Northrop, winning 25-9, 25-19, 25-18.

Niswander tallied eight kills while Platt recorded six aces for Huntington North. Stephan fueled the scoring with 26 assists.

Stephan also made her presence felt on defense, generating 13 digs. Niswander helped stymie the Lady Bruin offense with six blocks.
