Arens sparkles but Foresters lose hoop opener

The Huntington University men’s basketball team got a game-high 35 points from Tyler Arens, but fell short in its season opener to visiting Saint Xavier University, 96-89, on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Arens achieved his point total, a career best, on 12 of 18 shooting from the field and 8 of 12 marksmanship at the free-throw line. The junior also hit a career mark on the boards, pulling down 13 rebounds to post a double-double and give the hosts a 37-34 advantage in that department.

The Foresters, 0-1, went into the half down by 13, 53-40, but whittled that deficit down to single digits in the second stanza before ultimately falling by seven points.

Huntington also got a double-digit scoring effort from Mike Bush, who totaled 28 points. The senior point guard also aided his teammates’ scoring efforts with seven assists.

The Foresters went 32 for 64 from the field for 50 percent and 19 for 29 at the charity stripe for 65.5 percent.

Saint Xavier, 1-1, got 25 points, 11 rebounds and six assists from Quinn Niego.

The Cougars hit 36 of 63 shots from the floor for 57.1 percent and 12 of 18 attempts at the line for 66.7 percent.
