Huge HU second quarter does in Wright State in tourney

The Huntington University women’s basketball team blew visiting Wright State University Lake off the court in the second quarter and wound up with a 78-40 win at the Huntington University Tournament on Friday night, Nov. 17.

Improving to 5-1 on the season, the Foresters turned a 10-9 first quarter deficit into a 34-15 halftime lead by outscoring Wright State 25-5 in the second frame. The Foresters then dumped another 25-point barrage on the visitors in the third quarter to lead 59-26 heading into the final frame.

Maddie Richer led a balanced attack with 12 points. Brooke Yoder had 11 points off the bench, Brooke Saylor notched 10 points and freshman Alex Bope, in the first significant minutes of her HU career, scored 10 points in the final frame.

Onyx Lopez led Wright State, 0-6, with a game-high 16 points, and Nicole Fogt added 11 points.

Sam Hammel assisted on a Cindy In’t Groen bucket at the start of the second frame to put HU in front for good at 11-10, then Hammel hit a three off a Richer feed. Kelsey Wertz hit what would turn out to be just one of two field goals for Wright State before Richer fired in two more treys and Hailey Krewald hit a two for the first double figure lead of the contest.

Krewald wound up with eight points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds for the contest. Hammel added nine points.

HU hit 28 of 62 shots from the field for 45.2 percent and hit 14 of 17 from the stripe for 82.4 percent.

Wright State connected on only 14 of 47 from the field for 29.8 percent. The visitors hit 11 of 15 from the line for 73.3 percent.
