HU women dominate Mount Vernon, 65-40

The Huntington University women’s basketball team dominated host Mount Vernon Nazarene University, posting a 65-40 win on Saturday, Jan. 20.

After taking an 18-11 lead in the first quarter, the Foresters expanded their advantage to 38-20 by halftime and 51-26 by the end of three frames to put the game well out of reach heading into the fourth.

Huntington, 13-8 overall , 6-4 in Crossroads League play, was led by sophomore Sarah Fryman, who tallied 12 points. Junior Maddie Richer netted 11 points for the visitors while senior Hailey Krewald and junior Brooke Saylor both chipped in 10.

Saylor also collected a game-high 20 rebounds to notch a double-double and give the Foresters a 43-26 advantage on the glass.

Huntington shot 26 of 57 from the field for 45.6 percent and 9 of 12 at the free throw line for 75 percent.

Mount Vernon, 14-8, 6-4 in league action, got 12 points and as many rebounds from Taylor Gregory. Natalie Carpenter added 11 points to the hosts’ cause.

The Cougars struggled from the field, converting just 16 of 56 attempts for 28.6 percent, which included a 3 of 22 effort from beyond the arc. The hosts added five points in 10 attempts at the charity stripe for 50 percent.
