South Side stops Lady Vikes

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team suffered a 72-57 defeat to host South Side on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The Lady Vikings trailed by a manageable margin, 25-17, at the end of the first quarter, but got outscored 22-9 in the second to fall into a 47-26 hole by halftime. Coach Heidi Lawson’s squad trailed 56-44 at the end of three frames.

Huntington North, 11-10, was paced by senior Rileigh Johnson, who scored a game-high 21 points. Senior Hollyn Anderson tallied 13 points while junior Maddy Robrock tossed in 11.

Karmen Koch helped facilitate the Lady Vikings’ offensive effort with seven assists. The senior also had a hand in disrupting the Lady Archers’ scoring, notching six steals.

Huntington North hit 23 of 42 shots from the field for 54.8 percent and 7 of 13 attempts at the foul line for 53.8 percent.

South Side, 18-4, got 20 points from Taniece Chapman, who buried 9 of 10 shots from the floor. Mikeba Jones added 15 points while Shamari Jackson chipped in 10.

The Lady Archers drained 29 of 48 field goal attempts for 60.4 percent and 7 of 11 free throw tries for 63.6 percent.

South Side enjoyed a 23-17 edge in rebounding. Senior Larissa Johnson led Huntington North on the glass with six boards.

The Lady Vikings won big in the junior varsity contest, 38-10.

Huntington North, 14-7, was led by freshman Katelynn Arnold, who scored a game-best 14 points.
