A strong fourth quarter by Maddie Richer helped the Huntington University women’s basketball team defeat host Bethel College, 63-54, on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Richer, a junior, tallied nine of her 19 points for the game in the final frame, which began with the Foresters and Pilots deadlocked at 44. Thanks to Richer’s performance, however, which included a pair of three-pointers, the visitors were able to depart Gates Gymnasium with the win, their 14th against eight losses.

Huntington, 7-4 in Crossroads League play, got a team-high 20 points from Brooke Saylor, who supplemented Richer’s fourth-quarter scoring with five points. Saylor made it a double-double, her 13th of the season, with 14 rebounds. The junior’s efforts on the glass helped give the visitors a 39-18 advantage in that department.

The Foresters hit 23 of 50 shots from the field for 46 percent and 12 of 20 attempts at the foul line for 60 percent.

Huntington led 16-12 after the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime before Bethel managed to knot the game by the end of the third.

Bethel, 6-17, 1-10 in league play, was paced by Kelsey Brickner, who scored 22 points off the bench.

The Pilots converted 17 of 44 field goal attempts for 38.6 percent and 14 of 21 freebie tries for 66.7 percent.
