Spring Arbor stops Foresters' win string at 3

Visiting Spring Arbor University pulled away in the late minutes of the game to top the Huntington University men’s basketball team, 89-81, on Saturday, Jan. 27.

The loss breaks the Foresters’ three-game win string and drops them to 9-15 on the season, 5-7 in Crossroads League play.

Konner Platt had a game-high 24 points for HU, with 17 of those coming in the opening half as HU trailed SAU by a point at 40-39 at the break.

Mike Bush and Trevor Lockwood each had 16 points for HU, with Lockwood accounting for his in just under 19 minutes of play. Mason Coverstone added 10 points for HU.

Fourteen-ranked Spring Arbor, 19-5 overall and 7-5 in the Crossroads League, had six players score in double figures, led by Tommy Hamilton with 19 points and Zach Medendorp with 17. Drew Zuidema and Jeff Beckman each tallied 12 points, Brandon Durnell notched 11 and AJ Crawford had 10.

HU hit 31 of 59 shots from the field for 52.5 percent and added 11 of 14 at the free-throw line for 78.6 percent. The Cougars were a tick better from the field, hitting 34 of 60 for 56.7 percent, and connecting on all 13 of their free throws.

Devin Merder had six rebounds to lead HU, which took it on the chin off the boards to the tune of  36-20. Merder also led in assists with five.
