Third quarter lead evaporates into loss for HU women

A nine-point lead midway through the third quarter evaporated into a 73-67 regular-season ending loss for the Huntington University women’s basketball team on Saturday, Feb. 17, against visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

In a game of spurts, MVNU had the last one of the afternoon, a 14-3 burst which took the Cougars from a 45-36 deficit to a 50-48 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Foresters, completing their regular season at 16-13 overall and 9-9 in the Crossroads League, fought back from a 13-point deficit in the second quarter, and had their biggest edge of the day midway through the third frame.

Sophomore Sara Fryman led the Foresters with 19 points. Hailey Krewald and Brooke Saylor each chipped in 12.

Saylor also had a game-high 13 rebounds, and added four assists and three blocks.

Taylor Gregory tallied 19 points for MVNU, 17-13, 9-9 in the Crossroads League. Rachel Perry scored 17 off the Cougar bench, and Sierra Basista and Dani Ellerbrock finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Foresters shot 27 of 61 from the field for 44.3 percent and hit 8 of 9 from the free-throw line for 88.9 percent. The Cougars clicked on 27 of 55 shots from the field for 49.1 percent and added 13 of 17 from the stripe for 76.5 percent.
