Season comes to end for HU women's hoop

The season came to an end for the Huntington University women’s basketball team with a 75-65 loss to host Grace College in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

The fifth-seeded Foresters took a 17-13 lead in the first quarter, but the Lancers, seeded fourth, managed to knot the game by halftime at 27-27. Grace then seized the lead in the third quarter, 54-47, and protected that advantage in the final frame to advance in the tournament.

Huntington finishes the season 16-14, with a 9-9 mark in Crossroads League play.

The Foresters were paced by sophomore Sarah Fryman, who scored 14 points. Junior Maddie Richer contributed 11 points to the team’s cause while junior Brooke Saylor chipped in 10.

Freshman Sam Hammel grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for Huntington, which lost the battle of the boards, 39-28.

Coach Lori Culler’s squad went 23 of 62 from the field for 37.1 percent, which included a 5 of 24 effort from beyond the arc. The team connected on 14 of 20 free throw attempts for 70 percent.

Grace, 17-14, 10-8 in league play, was paced by Brooke Sugg, who tallied a game-high 23 points. Vironnica Drake netted 16 points and collected 11 rebounds while Micaela Box tossed in 10 points.

The Lancers converted 23 of 49 field goal attempts for 46.9 percent and 24 of 30 freebie opportunities for 80 percent.
