Danielle Korporal, a senior on the Huntington North High School gymnastics team, won the floor exercise at the Huntington North Regional on Saturday, March 3, to advance to the state finals.

Korporal, the Lady Vikings’ lone representative at regionals, captured first place on floor with a score of 9.350, which equaled her sectional tally.

“Going into it, I knew that I just needed to put everything out there,” said Korporal, “because my tumbling isn’t as high-level as most of the girls who made it to regionals this year. But I really just put my heart into every single thing and I really went for it on all my jumps and tumbling.

“I used my heart more than my body earlier today.”

Korporal credits one aspect of her routine, in particular, with giving her the edge over the competition.

“I think that a lot of the reason why I scored so high was because (of) my unique tumbling passes,” she observed. “Not a lot of people have my second or third tumbling pass.”

So, for the first time in her Huntington North career, Korporal will participate in the state meet, which is set for Saturday, March 10, at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena, in Muncie. She says she’ll be keeping her expectations in check for the event, just as she did for regionals.

“I’m just going to go and have fun,” said Korporal.

Other gymnasts from the Huntington North Regional joining Korporal at state in the floor exercise include Elkhart Central’s Analena Vanderzwaag, 9.325; Carroll’s Elia Smith, 9.300; Bishop Dwenger’s Sophia Wright-Turflinger, 9.250; Carroll’s McKinley Carroll, 9.250; Wawasee’s Reagan Atwood, 9.175; and Elkhart Central’s Skiler Reveal, 9.175.

In the team competition, Carroll came out on top with a score of 111.075. Homestead took second with a 109.575 while Bishop Dwenger claimed the third and final advancing spot with a 108.825.
