Lehman hit pushes HU softball team to first win of season

Sophomore Casey Lehman’s walk-off double propelled the Huntington University softball team to its first win of the season on Friday afternoon, March 2, in the second game of a doubleheader against visiting University of Rio Grande.

The Foresters lost the first game, 4-2, before coming back for a 5-4 win.

HU led the second game 1-0 after scoring a run in the fifth, but the RedStrom pushed three across in the top of the sixth for a 3-1 lead. HU got those runs back in its half of the frame, but Rio Grande tied the contest with a run in the top of the seventh before Lehman knocked in Audra Klopfenstein in the bottom of the frame.

Lehman and Klopfenstein each had two hits in the contest.

The comeback made a winner of Meghan Fretz in the circle. Fretz pitched all seven innings, yielding four earned runs on six hits with one walk.

Joelle Beals knocked an RBI-triple as one of three HU hits in the opener.

Mallory West went all seven innings for HU and got tagged with the loss, yielding just one earned run on 10 hits, with five strikeouts and two walks.
