HU softball team splits with SAU

Sophia Beachy racked up three hits to lead the Huntington University softball team past host Spring Arbor University, 5-3, in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, April 19.

The Foresters lost the opener, 6-3, as they ran their record to 18-13 on the season, 13-8 in the Crossroads League.

Beachy added a run batted in to her second game heroics for HU and Paige Eichelberger and Audra Klopfenstein added two hits to the cause.

Meghan Fretz was the beneficiary of the offense, going all seven innings and yielding eight hits, but only one earned run, with six strikeouts and three walks.

Fretz and Spring Arbor’s hurler matched zips through the first four frames of the nightcap before the Foresters put up a three-spot in the fifth and came back with two more runs in the sixth.

Both teams scored solo runs in the first inning of the opener, but SAU tacked on three runs in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. HU closed the gap to 5-3 in the fifth, but SAU got two insurance runs in the sixth.

Beachy and Casey Lehman led a nine-hit HU attack with a pair of safeties.

Lairen Miller took the loss in the circle, going six innings and yielding six earned runs on 12 hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
