Kaylor sweeps throwing events but HN trackboys lose

Damon Kaylor swept the throwing events, but the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity track team fell short to host Norwell, 72-60, on Tuesday, May 1.

Kaylor, a junior, won discus with a toss of 132-6 and shot put with a heave of 45-0. Senior Mitch McElhaney finished second to Kaylor in shot put, flinging the gray ball 43-1. Senior Joe Schnepp claimed third in discus, logging a throw of 120-8.

Mitchell Geller topped high jump for the Vikings, leaping 5-10. The senior also put forth a silver effort in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in :16.5.

Senior Carson Bolinger finished two spots after Geller in high jump, taking third with an effort of 5-8.

Ricky Haught rounded out the team’s points in field events with a first-place showing in long jump. The junior leaped 20-6 for his golden placement.

Huntington North swept the top two spots in both the 800 and 1,600-meter runs. In the shorter race, senior Aaron Hendryx captured first in 2:03.9 while junior Brock Spahr claimed second in 2:04.9. The longer race saw senior JJ Whicker earn gold in 4:49.3 while senior Nolan Young secured silver in 4:52.1.

Jacob Hall triumphed in the 200-meter dash. The senior stepped over the end stripe in :23.9. Junior Nolan Hughes finished two places behind him, attaining third in :24.3.

Junior Jarid Miller placed second in the 3,200-meter run, stopping the timer in 10:55.9. Junior Alex Bishop finished third in 11:02.0.

The 300-meter hurdles saw Bolinger and sophomore Nate Burns take second and third, respectively. Bolinger clocked in at :41.8 while Burns posted a time of :42.3.

Burns rounded out the Vikings’ top-three finishes with a bronze effort in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in :12.5.
