Vike trackboys second at New Haven sectional

A win by the 3,200-meter relay team helped propel the Huntington North High School boys’ track team to second place at the New Haven Sectional on Thursday, May 17.

The 3,200 relay squad, plus the Vikings’ 1,600-meter relay team and five athletes in individual events, punched their tickets to the Marion Regional at the meet by posting top-three finishes.

Senior Carson Bolinger, junior Brock Spahr and seniors Kasey Konz and Aaron Hendryx comprised Huntington North’s 3,200 relay quartet and clocked in at 8:08.84 for their golden finish.

The 800-meter run saw Hendryx and Spahr finish back-to-back, with Hendryx capturing second place and Spahr claiming third. Hendryx crossed the finish line in 2:01.76 while Spahr stopped the timer in 2:02.61.

Jacob Wust put forth a bronze effort in the 3,200-meter run. The senior stepped over the end stripe in 10:09.64.

The 1,600 relay foursome rounded out the Vikes’ points in running events with a third-place performance in 3:37.13. The quartet was comprised of sophomore Nate Burns, senior Jacob Hall, junior Nolan Hughes and senior Mitchell Geller.

In field events, Damon Kaylor and Ricky Haught placed third in shot put and long jump, respectively. Kaylor registered a throw of 46-7.25 for his placement while Haught logged a leap of 20-6.25 for his, which rounded out Huntington North’s automatic regional qualifiers.

Homestead claimed the sectional crown with 156 points. Huntington North earned its runner-up standing with 96 points, followed by Wayne, 93; New Haven, 80; Bellmont, 69; Heritage, 64; South Adams, 32; Bishop Luers, 22; and Adams Central, 12.
