HU spikers top No. 16 Cornerstone at own invite

The Huntington University volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over No. 16 Cornerstone University on the opening day of the HU Invitational on Friday, Aug. 17.

The Foresters’ big win evened their record on the day at 1-1, as they opened the invitational with a 1-3 setback to the University of Northwest Ohio.

Against Cornerstone, Coach Kyle Shondell’s squad dropped the first match, 13-25, but bounced back with three consecutive wins, 25-19, 25-13, 25-22, to take the contest.

Huntington, 1-1 on the season, got 12 kills from senior Tailor Schultheis. Freshman Lindsay Ingenito tallied eight kills while freshman Lanie McClanahan produced seven.

Jenna Tacosik helped facilitate the team’s offensive effort with 34 assists. The sophomore also got in on the scoring herself with two aces.

Defensively, sophomore Ariene Butler totaled 14 digs while sophomore Lauren Cresse blocked two shots and assisted on two others.

In the Northwest Ohio match, the Foresters kicked things off with a 25-21 victory. The Racers, however, countered with a 25-17 win in the second set, then edged the hosts with identical scores of 26-24 in the third and fourth frames to win the contest.

Sophomore Breanna Metz paced Huntington with 16 kills. Ingenito and sophomore Brandy Michie chipped in nine and eight kills, respectively, to the team’s offensive effort.

Tacosik dispensed 29 assists while also serving up three aces. Freshman Lauren Nagle tallied two aces.

On the defensive front, sophomore Nicole Flickinger and Butler produced 10 and nine digs, respectively. Cresse registered four blocks.
