Big Leo second quarter bites HNHS gridders

A big second quarter helped host Leo stick the Huntington North High School varsity football team with a 42-21 defeat on Friday, Sept. 28.

After crafting a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, the Lions distanced themselves from the Vikings in the second, outscoring the visitors 29-7. The hosts then tacked on an insurance touchdown in the third quarter before Coach Rick Burnau’s squad rounded out the game’s scoring with a pair of end zone trips in the final frame.

Huntington North, 2-5, 1-4 in the Northeast 8 Conference, was paced on offense by quarterback Brett Kaylor. The senior completed 23 of 36 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns.

Kaylor connected with wide receiver Deven Newcomb 12 times for 138 yards and wideout Andrew Smekens five times for 58 yards and a score. Zach Hubartt chipped in two receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, sophomore Reid Johnson led the Vikes with 47 yards and a score.

Huntington North finished with 420 yards on offense while Leo tallied 411. Of the Lions’ yards, 223 of them came on the ground for an average of 8.92 yards per attempt.

The Viking defense was led by linebacker Charlie Agnew, who made seven tackles. Linebacker Chandler Beaty grabbed an interception.

With the win, Leo improves to 4-3, 3-2 in Northeast 8 action.
