Viking harriers heading to semi-state

Senior Brock Spahr placed third at the Marion Boy’s Cross Country Regional on Saturday, Oct. 13, to lead Huntington North to a place at next week’s New Haven Semi-state.

Spahr’s finish helped the Vikings to a third place team total of 96, with the top five teams moving on to the The Plex on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Wabash, placing four runners in the top 10, dominated the meet with 37 points. Bellmont was second with 69 points, Oak Hill was fourth with 101 and New Haven tallied 116.

Spahr came home in 16:22.7 for his placing. Marion Sectional champ Brennan Butche of Mississinewa added another title to his resume by winning the race in 15:27.8, beating runner-up Dereck Vogel of Wabash by 43.4 seconds. Butche and the remaining nine best finishers whose teams do not advance also move on to semi-state.

Junior Isaiah Clampitt and senior Drew Davis were Spahr’s back-ups, each placing in the top 20. Clampitt was 16th among scoring runners with a time of 16:51.8, and Davis was 19th in 16:58.7.

Senior Jarid Miller was the fourth Viking with a 25th place finish in 17:22.5, and freshman Harrison Niswander locked up the HNHS scoring with 33rd place in 17:35.2.

Alexander Bishop placed 37th in 17:47.3 and Connor Miller was 42nd in 17:54.6 to complete the Viking squad.

In addition to Vogel’s runner-up spot, Wabash also got fourth place from Zackary Sweet, seventh from Koby Prater and ninth from Aaron Nickerson.
