HU women rout Cornerstone in CL/WHAC Classic

The Huntington University women’s basketball team routed host Cornerstone University, 72-42, on Friday, Nov. 2, in the Crossroads League/WHAC Classic.

The Foresters, 1-1, jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first quarter, which they expanded to 32-20 by halftime and 53-38 after three frames before outscoring the Golden Eagles by 15 in the final quarter to put the game far out of reach.

Huntington was led by sophomore Sam Hammel, who scored a game-best 18 points. Senior Maddie Richer tallied 12 points for the Foresters while junior Sarah Fryman tossed in 11. All three players, along with senior Brooke Saylor, dished out three assists apiece.

Saylor was active on the backboards, collecting a game-high eight rebounds for Huntington, which logged 36 boards to Cornerstone’s 38.

The Foresters converted 27 of 65 field goal attempts for 41.5 percent and 12 of 18 free throw tries for 66.7 percent.

Cornerstone, 0-4, went 16 of 45 from the field for 35.6 percent and 8 of 10 at the charity stripe for 80 percent.
