HU men's soccer team wins program first-ever CT Tournament; advances to NAIA nationals

The Huntington University men’s soccer team brought home the program’s first-ever Crossroads League Tournament championship and punched its ticket to the NAIA National Tournament by outlasting host Spring Arbor University, 2-1, on Saturday, night, Nov. 10.

The sixth-seeded Foresters held on to a 2-1 halftime lead to defeat the top-seeded Cougars, who entered the night with a 16-2-1 record compared to HU’s mark of 9-7-3.

Roderic Green put SAU on top with a goal at 13:22, but that was to be the only ball to get behind HU goalkeeper Gabe Greenfield on this night.  Not quite three minutes later, freshman Ben Arnold knotted the contest off a Guilhereme LinsSouza crossing pass, and at the 30:44 mark Arnold was the assist man as Ty Sproat redirected the ball into the back of the SAU net off a scramble from a corner kick.

Greenfield, a sophomore from Brazil, came up with some of his niftiest work of the night as he stopped two SAU shots in the game’s final 40 seconds.

Sproat, a senior, leads the team with eight goals this season.

The Foresters will find out where they will be headed in the national tourney by virtue of the automatic advancement on Monday, Nov. 12.
