HU men roll over Goshen with top scorers sitting

Even with their top two scorers out, the Huntington University men’s basketball team rolled to a 93-75 win over host Goshen College on Tuesday night, Jan. 8.

Sophomore Zac Owens and the freshmen trio of Peyton West, Caleb Middlesworth and Spencer Ballinger more than made up for the absences of Tyler Arens and Konner Platt as HU improved to 13-6 on the season, 3-4 in the Crossroads League. Owens hit 11 of 14 shots from the field and all four of his free throws to lead the way with a game-high 28 points, while West hit 7 of 9 fielders on the way to a career-best 21 points. Middlesworth added 19 points and Ballinger went 6 of 8 from the field on the way to his career-best of 15 points in his first collegiate start.

HU went 35 of 52 from the field for a sizzling 67.3 percent, including hitting 11 of 20 three-point tries for 55 percent. The Foresters added 12 successes in 15 tries from the foul stripe for 80 percent.

Nick Macon steered the offense with eight assists, and he helped the defense with a pair of steals. Owens had three steals.

Demarkus Stuckey led Goshen, 6-13 overall and 0-7 in the CL, with 22 points. Colton Noel and Ben Cotton each scored 12 points and Carter Boos tossed in 11.

The hosts hit 29 of 62 shots from the field for 46.8 percent. Then went 3 of 8 from the stripe for 37.5 percent.

Ballinger and West tied for HU’s lead in rebounds with six each.
