Aschliman sets conference record in butterfly at NE8 meet

Allie Aschliman set a conference record in the 100-yard butterfly and earned first-team all-conference honors to highlight the day for the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity swim team at the Northeast 8 Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Norwell.

Aschliman, a junior, won the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 1:01.24. She also earned runner-up honors in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 2:08.56. With those gold and silver efforts to her credit, she claimed one of the nine spots on the conference’s top team.

Laney Shaw was named second-team all-conference for the Lady Vikings. The junior captured third place in the 100-yard breaststroke, stopping the timer in :59.66. She also took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at :27.48.

Shaw and Aschliman also participated in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay for Huntington North, which placed fifth at the meet as a team. Shaw and Aschliman swam with senior Macy Lange and junior Alyssa Brinkman in both races. The quartet placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:07.80 and fifth in the 200 medley relay in 2:06.71.

Individually, Lange and Brinkman both posted a pair of top 10 finishes. Lange achieved seventh in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.62 and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:37.81. Brinkman attained ninth in the 100 backstroke in 1:15.27 and placed 10th in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.57.

East Noble captured the conference title with a register of 271. Norwell was runner-up with a total of 261, followed by Columbia City, 249; DeKalb, 170; Huntington North, 135; and Bellmont, 125.
