HU women come up short to Marian

The Huntington University women’s basketball team came up short to host Marian University, losing 72-61 on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

After a tight first quarter that ended with the Foresters trailing by just a point, 20-19, the eighth-ranked Knights pulled away in the second, outscoring Coach Lori Culler’s squad 22-13 to take a 42-32 lead into the half. Huntington cut the deficit to single digits by the close of the third, 56-49, but got outscored 16-12 in the final frame to sustain the loss.

Huntington, 12-8, 5-4 in the Crossroads League, was led by senior Maddie Richer, who tallied 18 points. Sophomore Sam Hammel totaled 17 points while senior Brooke Saylor produced 12 points, a game-high 13 rebounds and five assists.

The Foresters finished with 37 boards to the Knights’ 38.

Huntington hit 23 of 57 shots from the field for 40.4 percent and 10 of 18 free throw attempts for 55.6 percent.

Marian, 17-4, 8-1 in league play, was led by Macy Willoughby, who scored 19 points. Dejah Cyrus logged 18 points and 10 rebounds while Rachel Titzer contributed 12 points.

The Knights shot 46.8 percent from the field on 29 of 62 marksmanship and 75 percent at the charity stripe on 9 of 12 shooting.
