HU diamond men open CL season with close win

The Huntington University baseball team opened Crossroads League play by hanging on for a 7-6 win over host 22nd-rnaked Taylor University on Friday, March 8.

The Foresters, 5-5 overall, held at 7-2 lead until The Trojans, 16-5, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth. But HU freshman Joey Butz came in with two runners on and one out, picked off the runner at second base and then got a fly out to preserve the win.

Donovan Clark had three of the Foresters’ six hits on the afternoon, and scored two runs. Wilson Satchell had two hits.

DJ Moore went the first eight innings for HU and gave up two earned runs on seven hits, with 11 strikeouts and four walks to earn the win. Reliever Brent Turner pitched only one-third of an inning and gave up three earned runs on three hits, with a strikeout and two walks before Butz came on to put out the fire.

Taylor scored two runs in the first inning but the Foresters got one run back in the third inning. They scored two runs apiece in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings.
