HU netmen rally back to beat Holy Cross

After getting swept in doubles play, the Huntington University men’s tennis team bounced back with a strong showing in singles action and edged host Holy Cross College, 5-4, on Saturday, March 30.

Facing an 0-3 deficit after the doubles portion of the match, the Foresters proceeded to win the top five contests in singles play to secure the win, their 10th against seven defeats.

At third singles, Niko Rongos edged Dylan Euzarraga, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0. Ignacio Poncio dispatched JT Page in the No. 1 contest, 7-6, 6-2. In the fifth tilt, Giovanni Martinez defeated Jake Brown, 6-1, 7-5. Mariano Echevarria was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Dominic Gibson in the second contest. Sebastian Salas rounded out Huntington’s wins with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Derek Wappel at fourth singles.

The Foresters’ lone setback in singles play came at the No. 6 spot, where Brody Worl fell to Ben Beekman, 6-2, 2-6, 9-11.

In doubles action, the top Huntington duo of Poncio and Echevarria fell to Page and Gibson, 7-8. Rongos and Salas lost to Wappel and Euzarraga, 7-8, in the second tilt. In the third contest, Martinez and Illia Turaba got dispatched, 6-8, by Brown and Beekman.
