No. 5 Marian makes HU softball squad latest victim

The Huntington University softball team became No. 5 Marian University’s latest victim, losing to the host Knights by scores of 13-1 and 11-2 on Tuesday, April 2.

With the sweep, which saw both games end after five innings due to the run rule, Marian ran its record to 24-0, 14-0 in Crossroads League play. Huntington falls to 8-14, 4-8 in league action.

In the opening game, the Knights took a 2-1 lead in the first inning, then shut the Foresters out the rest of the way while sending 11 runners across home plate.

Marian did the balance of its damage against Meghan Fretz, who took the loss in the circle. The sophomore hurler, 5-6, yielded seven hits and nine earned runs in the game’s first 2.1 innings while walking four.

Sophomore Jada Crofoot paced Huntington at the plate with a run-scoring double. The visitors finished with four hits. The hosts banged out 12.

The second contest saw the Foresters trailing 3-2 after two frames. Senior Marty Harris batted in the first run with a single while junior Karley Blankenship batted in the second with a double. It was all Knights after that, as they scored five times in the third and three times in the fourth.

Sadie Baugh had the big stick for Marian, smacking two home runs as part of a three-hit effort that produced four runs.

The Knights registered three of their nine hits against Mallory West, who pitched the first inning for Huntington and took the loss. The sophomore, 2-7, allowed three earned runs and issued two walks.

The Foresters finished with eight hits, half of which were supplied by sophomore Kennedy Krull and freshman Kiera Stacy, who banged out two hits apiece.
