Columbia City snaps Lady Vikes' win string

Columbia City snapped the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team’s eight-game winning streak, handing the Lady Vikings a 41-34 defeat on Saturday, Jan. 18, at North Arena.

While Huntington North led after the first quarter, 11-10, it fell behind by halftime, 17-13. Columbia City proceeded to widen its advantage in the third quarter, going up 28-19. While Coach Matt Hinds’ squad managed to trim the deficit to 35-30 with just under a minute to play in the fourth, the visitors made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings slip to 13-5, 3-2 in Northeast 8 Conference play.

Huntington North was paced by junior Katelynn Arnold, who tossed in nine points. Junior Reece Colclesser and sophomore Addy Wiley each added six points to the team’s cause.

The Lady Vikes hit 13 of 41 shots from the field for 31.7 percent and 4 of 10 tries at the free throw line for 40 percent.

Wiley collected a team-best six rebounds, helping the hosts finish with 22 for the game.

With the win, Columbia City improves to 12-7, 4-1 in conference.

Huntington North also lost the junior varsity contest, 28-16. The Lady Vikings won the freshmen tilt, beating Bishop Dwenger, 31-16.
