HU SB team thumps Montreat; splits pair

The Huntington University softball team thumped Montreat College, 15-5, on Saturday, March 7, at Georgetown College.

The Foresters played host Georgetown later that day and got edged, 4-0.

Against Montreat, Huntington banged out 19 hits. Sophomore Kiera Stacy highlighted the offensive effort with three hits and five runs batted in. Of those hits, one was a three-run home run. Junior Jada Crofoot registered four hits and as many RBI while scoring a team-high three runs. Junior Sophia Beachy logged three hits, one of which was a solo long ball, and three RBI. Junior Paige Eichelberger added two hits and drove in a pair of runs while freshman Jenessa Hasty chipped in two base pokes and an RBI.

Huntington, 3-4, scored three runs in the first inning and added four more in the second before Montreat got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the second. It was all Foresters after that, with Coach Doug Gower’s squad tallying four runs in the third, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to bring the game to an early end via the eight-run rule.

Sophomore pitcher MacKyndsea Burke was the beneficiary of the offensive fireworks. The hurler, 1-0, tossed all six innings for the Foresters, yielding 10 hits and the five runs, which were earned, while walking one and fanning one to get the win.

In the Georgetown game, the Tigers broke open a scoreless tilt in the sixth inning, tallying four runs, then shut the Foresters out in the seventh to ice the contest.

Huntington was paced by Eichelberger and Crofoot, who produced two hits apiece.

Meghan Fretz took the loss in the circle for the Foresters, allowing six hits and the four runs, two of which were earned, in six innings. The junior, 1-2, walked two and struck out one.
