Foresters use improbable rally, win game in 10th

An improbable ninth-inning rally tied the game and the Huntington University baseball team pushed across the winning run in the 10th inning to beat Marian, 14-13, on Monday, March 9, at Logansport.

Trailing 13-11 heading into the bottom of the ninth, HU pieced together two walks, two wild pitches and three hit batsmen to knot the contest, then Jarret Gray sent HU home a winner with a game-ending RBI groundout in the 10th.

Ian McCutcheon scored the winning run after starting the 10th with a leadoff single. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before coming home on Gray’s grounder.

McCutcheon’s older brother, Alex, who normally stars for the Foresters with the ball in his left hand, starred in this one with a bat in his hands as he had three hits, including a home run and a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored.

Ian McCutcheon and Satchell Wilson each had two hits for HU, now 5-7 on the season, 3-0 in Crossroads League play.

Marian jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning,  but Alex McCutcheon’s three-run bomb in the bottom of the third helped tie the score at 5-all. Marian put up sevaen big runs in the top of the fifth, but HU scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth. Marian tallied a solo run in the eighth to put the score at 13-11.

Caleb Landrum got the win on the mound for HU, pitching the final two frame scoreless, with one hit, one strikeout and two walks. He was the fourth HU hurler of the game.
