HU softball team opens season 1-1

The Huntington University softball team opened its spring season in Tucson, AZ, on Monday, March 16, and split a pair of games with a 10-0 win over Trinity Christian College and an 8-2 loss to Minot State University.

Forester hurler Lauren Ward threw a one-hit shutout and got plenty of help from the offense to take down Trinity Christian in the opener. Ward gave up the lone single in the top of the first and struck out 12 without a walk in her five-inning complete-game effort.

At the plate, HU banged out 14 hits, with Megan Smith leading the way with a 3-3 performance that included a double and two RBI. The Foresters scored in each of the four innings and forced the Trolls into an early exit.

In the second game of the day, HU faced a tough Minot State University squad. The Beavers put four on the board in the bottom of the third with the help of two Forester errors and added another one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
HU got two back in the fifth off two hits and two Minot State miscues, but it was as close as the Foresters would get. The Beavers added three in their half of the sixth and sat HU down in order in the seventh to hand the Foresters the 8-2 loss.

In her debut for HU, freshman Molly Long went the distance on the mound in the loss. She gave up eight runs, four earned, on 11 hits and a walk while striking out six.

No one had more than one hit for the Foresters in the game.
