HU softball team racks up 3 wins in 1 day

Day two of the spring break trip to Arizona for the Huntington University softball team was very profitable as HU put three in the win column on Tuesday, March 17.

The Foresters beat Mayville State, 9-1, shut out Trinity Christian, 8-0, and squeaked out a 3-2 win in eight innings over Missouri Valley.

Ashley Scally got a lot of run support to go along with her two-hit performance on the mound to give HU it's first win of the day. Scally allowed the Comets just one run on the two hits and three walks while striking out eight.

The 4-1 Foresters out-hit Mayville State 14-2, with Brandi Gower banging out three hits and driving in two runs to lead HU. Megan Smith went 3-4 at the plate and had one RBI in the contest.

Freshman pitcher Molly Long recorded the first shutout and first win of her collegiate career against Trinity Christian. She gave up just four hits and walked two while striking out 13 hitters.

Kristi Purvis led the Foresters at the plate with two hits and three RBI.

HU's final game of the day required an extra inning to decide a winner. After four scoreless innings, the Foresters took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Missouri Valley knotted the score with two runs of its own in the top of the seventh.

HU went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and Lauren Ward struck out the side in the top of the eighth. With Jeanine Vaszari on second in the bottom of the frame, Brittney Bateman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to third and Brittany Gower singled to drive in the winning run.

Ward got the complete game win for the Foresters, giving up two runs on two hits and one free pass while striking out eight.

Vaszari put together a 3-4 performance at the plate and added a RBI.
