HU men sweep Grace

The Huntington University baseball team swept Grace College (GC) on Saturday, March 13, 7-2 and 4-0, at Logansport High School.

While GC scored first and out-hit their guests in the opener, the Foresters took control in the third with a pair of runs and never looked back. Langston Ginder doubled in HU’s first run and then made his way home with some gutsy base running on a passed ball to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Another RBI-double, this time at the bat of Camden Dice in the third, drove in two more runs after which Dice scampered home on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-1. Fast forward to the eighth where, after another Forester scored on a wild pitch, Dice was back at it for his second RBI-two-bagger to knock in his team’s final run.

Joey Butz posted his second win of the year. In addition to allowing just seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four during his 6.1 innings of work, his time on the mound also included working a double play to close out three consecutive frames.

Pitching was the talk of the town in the nightcap as well. Mason Shinabery needed just 77 pitches to toss a complete-game shutout, ruthlessly striking out nine while allowing just three hits, to remain perfect on the season at 4-0. So far this spring, he has struck out 31 batters while giving up just three walks.

Offensively, his teammates had his back to wrap HU’s second win of the day. Daniel Lichty’s RBI-groundout in the first got the Foresters on the board after which they added three more runs in the third.

The Foresters cashed in on four of their five hits in the third frame with Satchell Wilson, Jarret Gray and Alex McCutcheon each driving in a run with their base poke.
