Viking baseball team wins sectional opener

The Huntington North baseball team fell behind early but dominated New Haven in a 10-3 win in the opening round of the Class 4A Columbia City Sectional Wednesday night, May 24. Viking pitchers Wes Huff and Cole Martz combined to pitch a 3-hitter, shutting the Bulldogs out over the final six innings. New Haven took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first but the Vikings quickly answered in the top of the second inning with four runs to take a 4-3 lead. The score remained 4-3 through six innings before Huntington North unloaded with six runs in the top of the seventh inning and secured the win. Huff shook off a shaky start, giving up three runs on three hits and struck out two batters and Martz came in for the final inning and retired the side in order. Marcus Linker and Huff both went 2-3 with two RBIs, with Huff scoring two runs and Linker crossing the plate  Cont. on Pg. 15. once. Isaac Wilson was 2-5 on the night with one RBI and one run scored, followed by Jimmy Linker going 1-3 with two RBIs and one run, and Brady Harris, Lawson  Doyle, and Landon Moreland all driving in a run. The Vikings improved to 17-3 on the season with the win. Due to press deadline, the remainder of the sectional tournament coverage will be in the June 6 issue.
