It was a day of personal bests for the Huntington North High School varsity cross country team as it placed seventh among 37 teams Saturday at the Terre Haute Savings Bank State Preview.
The Vikings' strong showing against some of the best teams in the state came behind six personal best runs in the varsity division. Led by senior Jake Crosley, who placed 30th in 16:46.0, the Vikings tallied 281 points for their seventh place.
Hamilton Southeastern won the meet with 87 points, Carmel placed second with 102, Terre Haute North was third with 102, Valparaiso was fourth with 135, Westfield placed fifth with 162 and Carroll was sixth with 190 points.
Sean Lewis led off the PR parade by placing second for HNHS with a personal best 16:51.2 for 34th place overall. Cordell Lewis clocked a personal-best 17:04.5 for 51st place and Paul Hernandez had a personal-best of 17:19.5 for 63rd place. Skyler Vogleman wrapped up the scoring for HNHS by placing 103rd in 17:43.6.
Zach Prather ran 19:11.8, Jason Vogleman ran 19:33.0 and Alan Poon went 19:55.9 for the other three personal-best marks among the varsity runners.
John Mascari of Terre Haute North won the race with a 15:19.1 time. Chris Walden of Carmel was six seconds back in second place, and James Martinez of Carroll was third with a 15:42.4.
The Viking reserves one-upped their varsity counterparts in personal bests - notching seven - as they placed 10th overall in their division.
Sophomore Jacob Miller led the JV Vikes by placing 77th in a personal record 19:27.7.
Other Viking personal records came from Clay Baker, Jordan Bowlds, Samir Shaikh, Arley Carey, Karl Sieberns and Miguel Huerta.
Carmel won the reserve competition with 16 points.
