HU golfers win MCC, on to nationals

The Huntington University men's golf team used a final-round 6-over par 294 to surpass first day lead Indiana Wesleyan and win the 2009 Mid-Central College Conference Golf Championship on Tuesday, April 28.

The Foresters won by five strokes to claim an automatic bid to the NAIA men's Golf National Championship held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL, on May 19-22.

It marks the first time HU has qualified as a team for the national event.

HU shot a team score of 913 for the three-day event, posting a 317 on the first day and a 302 on the second.

Senior Spencer Batt led HU with rounds of 75, 76 and 72 for a total of 223, good for third place in individual play.

Freshman Jordan Dawes fired a 231 and finished in a tie for fifth, senior Justin Imel was one stroke further back with a 232 for eighth place and senior Ryan Bonner was another stroke back at 233, tied for ninth.

All top 10 finishers achieved all-conference honors.

Sophomore Cory Powell fired a non-scoring 244 for HU.

HU Coach Mark Green was named MCC Coach of the Year.
Indiana Wesleyan shot a 918 to place second, and Bethel College, led by individual champion Jon Bonfiglio, finished third with a 941.

Bonfiglio and runner-up Austin Conroy, of IWU, each shot a 222 during regulation play, with the Bethel star taking honors in extra holes.
